Volunteer Opportunities

Most Communities In Schools volunteer opportunities are located on a school campus. Volunteers are matched to meet weekly with a student during the school year, beginning in the fall and continuing until the end of the school year. To become a volunteer, please first complete the online volunteer application.

READING BUDDIES

  • Students who are behind in reading levels by third grade are more likely to drop out of school before graduating. Reading Buddies provide extra support and encouragement to students, helping them gain literacy skills, build confidence, and develop a lifelong love of learning. Reading Buddies also serve as mentors for the student, building a trusting and consistent relationship over the course of the semester.
  • Requirements:
    • 1.5 hour training
    • Criminal background check
    • Weekly commitment for the school year

TUTORING

  • As a Communities In Schools tutor, you will work with a student once a week during the school day. Tutors help struggling students achieve academic success through support and encouragement.
  • Requirements:
    • 1.5 hour training
    • Criminal background check
    • Must be able to commit to 1 hour per week for a full academic school semester
    • Must be able to volunteer between 8 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. Monday-Friday

MENTORING

  • Mentors meet with students at school for a full school year. Mentors serve as role models by providing consistent support on campus throughout the school year. Mentors are matched with students between August and November.
  • Requirements:
    • 1.5 hour training
    • Criminal background check
    • Must be able to commit to 1 hour per week for a full school year
    • Must be able to volunteer between 8 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. Monday-Friday

ORGANIZE A DRIVE FOR STUDENTS IN NEED

  • Work with friends, co-workers, or an organization to collect items for students in need.
  • The most needed items are:
    • Sock, underwear, belt drive
    • Hygiene kit drive & assembly
    • Board game & puzzle drive
    • Gift card drive
    • Comfort kit drive and assembly

PEBBLE PROJECT PRESENTER

  • The Communities In Schools Pebble Project staff present interactive role-plays to elementary school students to help prevent child assault and abuse. Volunteers take part in the role-plays and skits in classrooms during the morning hours.
  • Requirements:
    • Must be able to commit to extensive training
    • Must be able to volunteer in the morning hours at schools around Central Texas
    • Must commit to volunteer for at least 11 presentations after completing training
